Black Umfolosi

BLACK UMFOLOSI

Imbube is a traditional style of singing. It is also called "isichathamiya". The music was born in the mines of South Africa, started by black workers who used to hold social competitions during weekends. The music competitions became a highlight of everyone's social calendar. Winners of these social competitions got the adoration of their fans. Imbube has been made popular in the west by Ladysmith Black Mambazo of South Africa, but it would be so wrong to talk of this genre of music without talking about Zimbabwe’s Black Umfolosi.
